KNEE PAIN
Ilitobial Band Syndrome
What is it and how do we treat it?
Healthy Knee
The iliotibial band is a band of tissues that starts from the iliac crest in the pelvis, runs down the lateral part of the thighs, and fuses with the uppermost parts of the tibia (shinbone). The iliotibial band is made of two of the gluteal muscles in the buttocks, and it stretches across the knees. This thick band of tissues stabilizes and supports the outer part of the knee, and it’s essential for a range of motion.
IT Band Syndrome
Is a condition wherein the overuse of the connective tissues of the iliotibial band, usually because of consistent running and cycling, leads to an injury, resulting in discomfort, pain, and tenderness. The symptoms usually appear just above the knee joint. Is one of the most common causes of lateral knee pain amongst runners and bicyclists, but it can happen whenever someone overuses the gluteal muscles and the knee joints.

The most common symptom of ITBS is pain on the lateral side of the knee, usually caused by the inflammation of the connective tissues around the femoral epicondyle. The symptoms may start with mild, needle-like sensations or stinging pricks. If left untreated, the symptoms gradually escalate into severe pain whenever your heels meet the ground while walking or running, eventually preventing you from walking or climbing stairs. You may also notice a popping sound at the knee joint and swelling below the knees.

TREATMENT
Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy solutions, such as ultrasound and TENS, can minimize the inflammation and pain associated with ITBS. The TENS therapy uses gentle electrical impulses to disrupt and block the pain signals from traveling to the brain, thus alleviating the sensation of pain. Instead of pain, you may feel a gentle tingling sensation at the location of the electrode pads. This treatment also releases endorphins to combat pain.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy involves alternating extremely hot and cold temperatures to reduce inflammation and pain. You need to apply ice packs every 10 to 15 minutes for an hour and repeat the process around three times a day. This should be done until the pain is gone. This treatment alleviates the symptoms of ITBS, but you may need additional minimally invasive treatments for long-lasting results.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER
IT Band Syndrome Treatment
The primary goal of ITBS treatment is to alleviate pain and inflammation using a wide range of conservative and minimally invasive options. The treatment must be combined with the conditioning of the associated muscles to prevent the recurrence of ITBS when returning to full function and fitness.
